Backyard BBQ Hacks: 5 Unexpected Ways to Use Granola on the Grill

Summer is here, and that means backyard BBQs are in full swing! Typically, burgers, hot dogs, and fresh salads are the stars of the show. However, there’s one surprising ingredient you can add to your grill that will elevate your dishes: Little Red Wagon Granola! Granola can bring texture, sweetness, and even savory notes to your BBQ spread. Get ready to bring your favorite granola out of the pantry and onto the patio with these five creative hacks that will surprise and delight your guests.

1. Granola-Crusted Grilled Fruit

Grilled fruit is a popular addition to any backyard BBQ, and granola can take it to the next level. Fresh peaches, pineapples, or even strawberries can be brushed with a bit of honey and then rolled in granola for a sweet, crunchy exterior. When placed on the grill, the granola caramelizes slightly. This creates a satisfying crunch while maintaining the juicy freshness of the fruit. It’s the perfect side dish or dessert to complement your grilled meats.

2. Sweet-and-Savory Granola Toppings for Slaw

Adding granola to coleslaw elevates this classic BBQ side dish. Try mixing a handful of Original Little Red Wagon Granola into your creamy coleslaw for an unexpected crunch. Granola’s nutty, sweet flavor pairs wonderfully with the tangy vinegar and creaminess of slaw, making it a unique and memorable side.

3. Granola-Crusted Grilled Chicken

Need a new way to season your grilled chicken? Granola can create a flavorful crust that adds texture and taste. Simply crush up your favorite granola (we recommend Original) and mix it with olive oil, salt, and pepper. Coat your chicken breasts with the mixture before grilling, and let the granola’s crunchy coating transform your BBQ chicken into a gourmet meal. The slight sweetness combined with the savory flavors from the nuts and oats makes for a delicious, unexpected twist on this classic BBQ dish.

4. Granola-Infused BBQ Sauces

BBQ sauces are the heart and soul of any cookout, but you can mix things up by infusing your sauces with granola. Add a handful of finely ground granola to your favorite BBQ sauce to add texture and subtle sweetness. The result? A sauce with a richer depth of flavor that pairs perfectly with grilled meats. Try this hack with ribs, burgers, or even grilled vegetables for an interesting twist on traditional BBQ. Granola’s versatility shines through in this recipe, adding dynamic flavors that your guests will love!

5. Smoky Trail Mix for Snacking

What’s a BBQ without snacks? Combine Little Red Wagon Granola with nuts, dried fruit, and a dash of smoked paprika or chipotle powder for a spicy, smoky flavor that will keep everyone coming back for more. Serve it in bowls around your patio for guests to snack on as they enjoy the sun, or offer it as a side to accompany the BBQ. It’s the perfect portable snack for a laid-back cookout or an energy boost during all the backyard games.
